Dr. Phil Imholte

Sport Psychologist

Phil Imholte, PsyD, LP (he/his) is a licensed psychologist who specializes in counseling and sport psychology. Phil uses a relational approach and recognizes that meeting clients where they are at is a key part of sustaining mental health and performance. He also values multiculturalism and helping clients understand how to leverage their strengths.

Phil started his career in sport psychology as a graduate student consultant at The Center for Sport & Performance Psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. At MSU-Mankato, Phil also taught sport psychology undergraduate courses and served as a consultant/assistant coach for the Maverick baseball team. He has worked with athletes and general caseloads in multiple college counseling settings, two community health settings, a partial hospital, and a high-school based clinic. Notably, he performed ADHD assessments for athletes at UMass-Amherst and ran an Athlete Transitions group at the University of St. Thomas. His research has spanned general interests, such as the well-being of emerging adults, to sport-specific concentrations such as athlete leadership in professional baseball. At Premier, Phil enjoys working with clients of ages youth to master’s, and all sport backgrounds. Among his consultative and clinical interests are self-esteem, dealing with stress and adverse experiences, athlete leadership, return from injury, general and performance anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship issues, and adjustment-related concerns.  Phil also has a specialty in grief, loss, and bereavement. He’s taught an undergraduate course on grief and loss, and volunteered several years as a consultant for Rick’s Place (Wilbraham, MA) where he ran grief groups for school-aged children, adolescents, and adults and facilitated training for support staff.  He’s completed research on emerging adults’ bereavement experiences from a well-being perspective.

Phil’s coaching and performance background is extensive. A three-sport athlete in high school (baseball, football, basketball), he later played baseball for St. Cloud State University and for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northwoods League. He went on to coach three seasons of summer collegiate baseball in the The Northwoods League after several years of youth sport coaching (soccer, softball, and baseball). His recreational sport resume includes several racquet sports and having run a marathon. Phil has also moonlighted as a musician and vocalist for several music groups and solo accompaniments, and has taught piano to pre-adolescents.

Outside of Premier, Phil enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, Piper, as well as traveling to visit friends and family. His other interests include music, the outdoors, and all things pickleball.
