Work Experience

Phil comes to Premier with years of experience that spans clinical, counseling, performance consulting, coaching, and teaching. His work with athletes has continued at Premier through providing services for student-athletes at University of Minnesota as well as in-person and virtual services to individuals and groups of all skill levels and ages. He also serves as Premier’s Director of Clinical Training.

Background

Phil Imholte, PsyD, LP, CMPC (he/his) is a licensed psychologist with a background in counseling and sport psychology. Phil uses an integrative, strengths-based approach that values multiculturalism, inclusivity, and helping clients from all circumstances. He views building an alliance with his clients and utilizing a growth mindset as cornerstones for sustaining mental health and performance.

He started his career at The Center for Sport & Performance Psychology at MSU-Mankato. He has since worked with athletes and the general population in multiple university settings (University of St. Thomas, UMass-Amherst, Springfield College), community health centers, a partial hospital, and a high-school based clinic. At Premier, Phil works with primarily adolescents and adults.

Among his interests are self-esteem, identity development, trauma and adverse experiences, interpersonal/relationship issues, anxiety of all kinds (performance anxiety, general, social), depression, return from injury, OCD, and adjustment-related concerns. Phil also has a specialty in supporting grief, loss and bereavement concerns. He spent several years consulting for Rick’s Place (Wilbraham, MA) where he facilitated training for support staff and ran grief groups for children, adolescents, and adults. Phil’s research background includes grief and loss, college student well-being, and athlete leadership in professional sport.

A three-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball, baseball), Phil went on to play and coach collegiate baseball, including three summers of coaching in the Northwoods League. Outside of Premier, Phil enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, racquet sports, and music.
