Dr. Phil Imholte

Sport Psychologist

Phil Imholte, PsyD, LP, CMPC (he/his) is a licensed psychologist who specializes in counseling and sport psychology. Phil uses a relational approach and recognizes that meeting clients where they are at is a key part of sustaining mental health and performance. He also values inclusion, multiculturalism and helping clients understand how to leverage their strengths.

Phil has worked with athletes and the general population in multiple college counseling settings, two community health settings, a partial hospital, and a high-school based clinic. He started his career as a consultant at The Center for Sport & Performance Psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he also taught sport psychology courses and volunteered as a consultant/assistant coach for the Maverick baseball team. He performed ADHD assessments for athletes at UMass-Amherst and ran an Athlete Transitions group at the University of St. Thomas. At Premier, Phil enjoys working with clients of all ages (youth to master’s) and backgrounds. Among his interests are self-esteem, dealing with stress, trauma, and adverse experiences, athlete leadership, return from injury, general and performance anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship issues, and adjustment-related concerns.

Phil also has a specialty in grief, loss and bereavement concerns. He’s previously designed and taught a college course on grief and loss based on his mixed methods research on emerging adults’ bereavement experiences. He spent several years as a volunteer consultant for Rick’s Place (Wilbraham, MA) where he facilitated training for support staff and ran grief groups for children, adolescents, and adults. Additionally, Phil’s research background includes college student well-being and athlete leadership in professional sport.

A three-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball, baseball), he later played baseball for St. Cloud State University and for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northwoods League. He went on to coach three seasons of summer collegiate baseball in the The Northwoods League after several years of youth sport coaching (soccer, softball, and baseball). Phil’s performance background also includes having taught piano to pre-adolescents and moonlighting as a musician/vocalist for several music groups and solo accompaniments. His recreational resume includes several racquet sports (e.g., pickleball) and having run a marathon. Outside of Premier, Phil enjoys traveling with his wife and daughter, the outdoors, and traveling.
