Virtual Sessions

Premier Sport Psychology offers virtual sessions for clients who are out of state, immunocompromised, or otherwise prefer to receive one-on-one or group sessions remotely.

Understanding

Virtual Sessions

Virtual sessions offer our clients the ability to receive one-on-one performance coaching and mental health services remotely, from the comfort of their own homes, through the use of secure video conferencing software. While the use of virtual counseling has been on the rise in recent years, Premier Sport Psychology has been offering virtual services since 2014, and pride ourselves on our ability to motivate meaningful change through audio and video sessions for clients unable to visit us in person.

The aims of virtual sessions are no different than services provided in-person, but give clients who might not otherwise have access to our sport psychologists and mental performance consultants the opportunity to receive regular coaching and care discretely and conveniently.

WHY

VIRTUAL SESSIONS

Individuals choose virtual sessions for a variety of reasons, including:

Distance Services

Virtual sessions are an ideal medium for clients to receive access to out-of-state providers.

Safety Precautions

Individuals who are ill or immunocompromised can continue to receive safe and secure mental healthcare without leaving home.

Social Anxieties and Privacy Concerns

Virtual sessions are an easy and accessible means to receive mental health or performance coaching services discretely.

Convenience

For many, virtual sessions are the easiest way to maintain consistency in their mental healthcare while traveling, competing, or managing busy personal and professional schedules.

what to

expect

The primary differences between virtual and in-person services are logistical. Our staff will walk you through the particulars, such as getting signed-in to our secure portal, when your appointment is scheduled, and offer suggestions to make your session successful, such as testing your internet connection in advance of the session, and choosing a quiet, comfortable, and private location in your home or office for the session to take place. Headphones or earbuds are strongly encouraged, both to blunt distracting noises and to keep the content of your session as private as possible. Your session will be audio and video, much like a FaceTime or Zoom call. These sessions are not recorded and are protected by the same standards of confidentiality as in-person counseling sessions.

For those receiving mental health or performance coaching services for the first time, the first session will consist largely of information gathering, to acquaint your provider with the specific goals you want to achieve through counseling, and to identify the obstacles you have faced in pursuit of those goals in the past. Much like an in-person session, you and your provider will then collaborate to create an action plan to address these obstacles and achieve your goals. The precise pathway through these sessions will vary from client to client and from provider to provider, but whether receiving remote, in-person, or a combination of these services, we are here to help you think, perform, and feel better in all venues of daily life.

You should feel encouraged to share any questions or concerns you may have about this process with your provider, and to discuss counseling alternatives in the event that you ever feel uncomfortable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

ARE VIRTUAL SESSIONS AS EFFECTIVE AS IN-PERSON SESSIONS?

In most cases, yes.  Studies have shown that telepsychology is as effective as in-person care in the treatment of most behavioral health conditions.  In cases of acute symptoms or serious mental health concerns, however, we believe that local, in-person services are in the best interest of the client.  If at any time your provider believes a local provider is more appropriate for your care, we will help you find a local resource well-suited to meet your needs.

CAN I RECEIVE VIRTUAL SESSIONS IF I LIVE OUT OF STATE?

Yes.  We offer performance services for athletes anywhere in the world.  We’re also able to offer mental health services to individuals in PSYPACT-participating states.  Please contact us to see if you are eligible, or visit PSYPACT’s informational site here.

IS SPORT PSYCHOLOGY ONLY FOR ATHLETES?

Not hardly. While “sport psychology” is the name given to the field, the origin and aim of all sport psychology is more accurately described as “the psychology of performance,” or the mental operations behind all performance. The tools used in sport psychology sessions apply as naturally to performing in the classroom, the board room, the operating room, and on the stage as they do to field, rink, court, or mat. We’re building skills to perform better as people, not merely as athletes.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SESSION?

Our sessions are tailored to each individual, so sessions will vary based on the presenting issues and disposition of the client. That said, our ambitions in one-on-one sessions remain largely the same: to understand the client’s goals, and the impediments to those goals. Once those understandings are in place, we will work with the individual to address, accept, or remove the impediments, and create a pathway to optimizing performance and achieving the goal.

WHAT IS THE AGE RANGE OF PEOPLE WE SERVE?

Our one-on-one sessions are suitable to individuals of all ages. Our current clients range in age from young athletes in their early grade school years to enthusiasts well into their retirement.

DO YOU HAVE RESOURCES FOR PARENTS CONSIDERING SPORT PSYCHOLOGY FOR THEIR CHILD?

We do.  You can visit our Resources for Parents page, or contact us directly.  Receiving psychological services can be a big step, and we’re here to make sure that it is the right one for you and your child.
