UNDERSTANDING PSYPACT

What it means to you, your training, and your mental health

what is

psypact?

PSYPACT is an agreement between participating states to allow psychologists to ethically provide
psychological services across state lines through virtual mental health and temporary
in-person sessions.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

for me?

In a word: choice. Individuals in PsyPact-participating states can now select the psychologists who best meet their needs, no matter where their practices are located. Provided the psychologist is properly licensed, PsyPact allows you to choose your provider based on fit and preference, and not geography.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN

FOR SPORT PSYCHOLOGY?

Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary field providing both mental health and performance counseling—often, but not always, in combination. PsyPact allows those living in participating states to receive mental health and combination services from sport psychologists practicing out of state, giving you a range of providers to choose from, and allowing you and your sport psychologist to stretch beyond performance to the psychological conditions that underpin it.

Do i

qualify?

If you are interested in performance coaching alone, you can schedule virtual sessions with a sport psychologist no matter where you live. If you are interested in mental health or combination services, you will need to either live in the same state as your provider, or reside in a PsyPact-participating state to receive out-of-state services.

We have been providing in-person sessions to individuals and teams for over a decade, and have incorporated virtual sessions for remote clients since 2014. FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS

ARE THERE LIMITATIONS TO THE VIRTUAL SESSIONS AVAILABLE THROUGH PSYPACT?

Yes.  Premier Sport Psychology is a firm believer that in cases of acute symptoms or serious mental health concerns, local in-person services are more effective than remote services.  We do our best to assess the fit for services during the initial point of contact with our office.  If at any time your provider determines that a local provider is more appropriate for your care, we will help you find a local resource well-suited to your needs.

WHICH STATES PARTICIPATE IN PSYPACT?

The number of PsyPact-participating states is rapidly increasing, with over half of the United States current on board with the pact.  To determine whether your state is a participant, visit the PSYPACT MAP.  This page is updated daily, and a fantastic resource for those waiting for access to PsyPact-related services.

IS SPORT PSYCHOLOGY ONLY FOR ATHLETES?

Not hardly. While “sport psychology” is the name given to the field, the origin and aim of all sport psychology is more accurately described as “the psychology of performance,” or the mental operations behind all performance. The tools used in sport psychology sessions apply as naturally to performing in the classroom, the board room, the operating room, and on the stage as they do to field, rink, court, or mat. We’re building skills to perform better as people, not merely as athletes.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SESSION?

Our sessions are tailored to each individual, so sessions will vary based on the presenting issues and disposition of the client. That said, our ambitions in one-on-one sessions remain largely the same: to understand the client’s goals, and the impediments to those goals. Once those understandings are in place, we will work with the individual to address, accept, or remove the impediments, and create a pathway to optimizing performance and achieving the goal.

WHAT IS THE AGE RANGE OF PEOPLE WE SERVE?

Our one-on-one sessions are suitable to individuals of all ages. Our current clients range in age from young athletes in their early grade school years to enthusiasts well into their retirement.

DO YOU HAVE RESOURCES FOR PARENTS CONSIDERING SPORT PSYCHOLOGY FOR THEIR CHILD?

We do.  You can visit our Resources for Parents page, or contact us directly.  Receiving psychological services can be a big step, and we’re here to make sure that it is the right one for you and your child.
