Position Summary:
The MLB Team Licensed Mental Health Clinician is primarily responsible for providing mental health services to the Latinx players and staff within the MLB team and their respective affiliate and development teams. They will also be responsible for providing such services to the English-speaking players and staff. This individual expands the care that is currently being provided to the team by helping to educate, destigmatize, and treat mental health as well as enhance the overall mental well-being and mental performance of players and staff. Additionally, this individual works with other licensed mental health providers and Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CMPC) to deliver mental skills training to both players and staff members in order to maximize ability and availability of mental skills throughout the organization in building a winning culture.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide mental health and mental performance services to MLB organization players and staff with a primary focus on Latinx players and staff (e.g., individual counseling, case management, group workshops, presentations)
  • Assist in development of resources (e.g., handouts, social media posts, video/audio libraries) and implementation of programming (e.g., workshops, presentations, individual sessions) to proactively destigmatize and address mental health of players and staff with a primary focus on Latinx players and staff
  • Work with other sport psychology team members and MLB team’s departments (e.g., education, medical, strength & conditioning) to implement programming specifically designed to assist in the transition process of Latinx players into the United States
  • Establish and maintain relationships with referral sources for mental health (e.g., mental skills consultants, psychologists, EAP, team doctors) and physical health (e.g., team doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning) both within the MLB team organization and outside of the organization
  • Readily offer and utilize mental health referrals within and outside of the organization as well as assist in the transfer of care when needed
  • Develop and deliver psychoeducational programming specifically regarding mental health and crisis management to MLB coaching staff, medical staff, and players
  • Educate fellow team members to expand and advance the mental health and mental skills programming as well as the competency of fellow sport psychology team staff members
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary staff (e.g., player development, front office, coaching staff, etc.)
  • Provide impactful services throughout spring training, affiliate season, fall instructional leagues, and in the off-season
  • Be available for remote support for affiliate staffs and players in the United States and the Dominican Republic
  • Maintain consistent communication and embrace a collaborative approach with the entire sport psychology team
  • Document services provided to groups and individuals
  • Support individuals with the transition into the United States workforce and all the stressors that it entails for international players and staff
  • Traveling within the United States and the Dominican Republic may be required
  • Other duties as assigned (unconventional hours may be required)

Education, Experience & Other Qualifications:

  • Current Florida license in clinical/counseling psychology, or a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Florida (e.g., LP, LPA, LPC, LCSW, LMFT)
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) is preferred
  • Strong generalist with knowledge and experience in providing individual mental health counseling and case management services
  • 2+ years working on mental performance strategies with military, collegiate, Olympic, professional, elite or youth athletes
  • Passion for delivering presentations and/or workshops in-person or virtually on mental health or mental skills development
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to provide multiculturally-competent clinical services
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document, and evaluate individual, crisis intervention, and consultation/outreach
  • Interest and/or understanding of player development is preferred
  • Previous experience working in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Flexible in terms of hours, responsibilities, and travel as work requires
  • Communicates effectively and builds strong relationships with clients
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload
  • Ability to utilize an electronic health record system
  • Maintain a team-oriented and growth mindset and a willingness to support the team
